ydney. If Australia is the Land of Oz, then this is surely the Emerald City. Sandstone ridges encrusted with apartments and mansions, patchworks of olive green bushland, and a coast of golden sun-drenched beaches, all enclosing a harbour of glittering deep blue water sprinkled with white sailed yachts. They sent the poor of London here for punishment, but most must have settled in this place with smiles on their faces. The heart of the modern city is a spine of skyscrapers that line the crooked bullock tracks of the 18th century settlement, where the odd Georgian row house and Victorian wedding cake jostles with glass and concrete upstarts that could well be gone by tomorrow. Sydney embraces its beauty and sells it out for all it can.
Arguably the continent’s only real metropolis, Sydney is the fast and impatient financial capital of the nation, real estate obsessed, and constantly on the climb. For many, the rest of the country may as well not exist--it IS Australia and the only place to be. Sydneysiders are tribal—from every nation on earth they can be proud suburbanites on the western plains, silvertails of the north shore, surfies of Manly and the Shire, socially aspirational in the east, and gentrified bohemians in the former slums of the centre. Stunningly beautiful without its embellishments, the harbour city was blessed by some kindly wizard who decorated it with the jewels of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Beauty, money and internationally renowned icons—how can you beat that?
